“What I like about the Mule Tote is that it’s a really fun project to sew for new or experienced sewists. This project could be done slowly over a Sunday or managed in tiny chunks in the gaps of life.

However long it takes, the intention for the maker is to have an enjoyable time sewing this tote using the construction method provided. And as a bonus, the bag finishes so nicely, which makes it the perfect gift!

My advice, start with the Maxi. It requires 1m of fabric so I’m sure you’ve got something in your stash for this project already! Once you’ve sewn one, the next will be easier and you’ll be able to enjoy the process all over again. I always find myself admiring the neat seams when the project is finished, it is what makes this a very special tote bag in a world full of many tote bags!”

Cotton: Twill, light canvas, chambrays, quilting cotton, gingham, light duckcloth, barkcloth, poplin, broadcloth and light corduroy.

Linen: Mid-weight linens.

I have added two long thin ties to the inside of the top fold, along the sides, to keep my goods tucked inside. Recommended Fabrics

Main Fabric: Textiles such as cottons, canvas, denim, corduroy. 

Directional prints are not recommended for main fabric.

Lining Fabric: Mid-weight textiles such as printed cottons, linens; basically most fabrics will work for this - search your scrap bin! Avoid easily fraying fabrics.

Interfacing: Fusible interfacing, light-midweight (weight such as the type used for collars in shirts. 

Interfacing Stiff: Fusible Interfacing, heavyweight, such as 

Pellon #71F Peltex or Birch Heavy Non-Woven Interfacing or Vilene 1050 HF-10 Heavyweight Iron-on Interfacing

Required Tools

1 x 25cm (10”) metal zipper 

1 x nylon zipper for internal pocket, at least 17.5cm (7”) long

1 x set of 14-18mm magnetic purse clasps

1 x set of wrist strap hardware (12mm D-ring and swivel hook)
